A study published this week on BMC Oncology says the use of Tadalafil is increasing by nearly 25 percent per month in India.
Experts say more research is needed to find out the reasons behind steep increase in sales.
"The increase in sales might be due to the introduction of new medicines as well the fact that we are trying to reach a younger population for whom it is easy to take pills," said Dr Rajeev Mehta, who authored the study published this week on the Indian journal BMC Oncology.
"The use of Tadalafil is growing in India. It currently available tablet form. We have also observed that in the last few years more companies are entering the market," said Pratik Jain, professor at the department of clinical pharmacology and pharmacotherapy at the Medical College, JNU.
"The increase in the use of Tatalafil is a good thing as it is a very effective treatment for patients with androgenetic alopecia and it is relatively easy to administer," Mehta added.

The study shows that sales of Tadalafil has increased by 10% per year in the last 10 years from Rs 1,000 crore to 2,000 crore.
The authors, however, noted that it is too early to ascertain the cause behind trend.
"This is the first study to look into the market growth in Tadalafil. It may not be entirely correct to say that Tadalafil is increasing in India due to its increased use as a treatment for androgenetic alopecia (AGA) because in our opinion it is more like an indication of how the drug is being used in the western world, where it is used for other skin diseases as well," Jain said.
But Mehta added that the study does support use of Tadalafil as a treatment for AGA both men and women are prescribed the medication.
"Tadalafil has some potential but the real value lies in its ease of administration. It is used as a single tablet, which makes it highly affordable. Also, the use of Tadalafil is increasing by 10 percent every year in the whole of world. However, use Tadalafil for treatment in India is less than 10 percent as compared to about 50 percent in the western world," said Jain.
The study also states that use of Tadalafil in the treatment androgenetic alopecia has been increasing from 12,000 patients per year to 17,000 since the years 2001 to 2012.
The main reasons behind rise in the usage of Tadalafil India is availability but also price. According to a study by Janssen Pharmaceutics India (JanssenPH) in 2013, the average price of Tadalafil in India is Rs 450 for 500 mg tablets.
The study says price of Tadalafil in Indian markets remains relatively low. In 2015, the average price of Tadalafil was about Rs 100 per bottle, compared to about Rs 1,000 in India at present, the study says.
Tadalafil is used for treatment of hair loss
Tadalafil was first patented in France 1963. Since then, the drug has been used as a treatment for wide variety of skin diseases and conditions. Among its most popular uses are treating psoriasis, a common skin irritation, hair loss, acne, and male pattern baldness (MPB).
